Wheeler, Birk, Boyer: A-1/39 Inf (M), 1987.

Desperate times call for desperate measures . . . and it doesn't get any more desperate than this. Here are Jim Wheeler, SGT Birk and SP/4 Boyer putting their .45s to the test in Alpha Company 1/39 Inf (M), Baumholder FRG 1987.

I took the photo but Jim's the one who scanned it and sent it in.

Small world!

AAAO!

I remember Sgt Birk now. He also had a great "short-timers" calender in his room, we talked about how best to throw his boots over the wire when he got to leave. I think he also enjoyed his smokes.Odd the things you remember.. This was prior to Boyer and Wheeler(Shelverton driver) going to HHC

That's him all right. Same guy who blew up a steel target lifter with a LAW down at Graf one year. It was the shot of a lifetime -- no one could ever seem to hit anything with those, but Sgt Birk nailed it.

Went skiing in Garmish with Wheeler, Lt. Ablowich(2nd platoon, A co, yellow Mercedes) and a Corp. Grey from Tennesee also with Aco 2nd.
I have some photos of Boyer in Hoenfelds and if I remember correctly, Sgt Birk had a unique laugh also

Jim,

I think there's three people posting here -- you, me and Sean Carpenter. Am guessing "jrw" is you.

Although I can't spell it, the name in that last comment is Runningen. He was a sandy-haired guy who arrived at Alpha Co in 1987. Crazy about Led Zeppelin.

Hey Wheeler!
My name is Sean P. Carpenter
I was with 1st sqd, 2n plt. Aco PFC just as you got the gig with LTC Shelverton. You and I,with Cpl Grey and Lt. Mike Ablowich(before Lt. Reyes)(also from 2nd plt. Aco) went down to Garmish in Lt's yellow Mercedes. We were snowed out 1st afternoon, but the next day it was great, sunshine, cold Lowenbrau on the resthaus deck. Then we all went to the restaurant where they served wild boar and rabbit. Next day we attacked another side of the mountain and stopped at the mid-mountain chow house.Rollbaten with some bead pasta and brown gravy-I think.
I hung out with Moncur, a little with Runnigan, and Berrgren from 3rd plt.(rock on)Boyer, Marsh, and a couple of others would stop by to say hey to us, and enjoy some reggae tunes on my stereo. Butac and Garcia, and Cpl Heppner lived across the hall from me.
Hope the world is treating you well.I heard that you were a Bay area cat. I've done some work in the Benicia, and Richmond, Martinez areas, and I was born in Walnut Creek, and still have peeps in the area.
Take care

I roomed with Wheeler and drove the Bn S3 for a while. We had lots of opportunities to keep each other company on the firing range. I particularly remember one night while sitting in the jeep with Jim. TOW missiles were supposed to be firing but there was some delay. Just as Jim put on the NODs to see what the problem was - BAM!

He said his eyes wrapped around to the back of his head.
