Regimental Commanders COL Rosson and COL Mitchell 1955 - 1957

Note: I held this one back from publication, but as time goes by I'm less inclined to do that. Better to get the info out and let it take its course. Naturally, if anyone objects, I'll hear them out.

I’m Billy Mitchell.  I was a German orphan adopted in 1956 by George and Rosa Lee Mitchell while he was an officer in the 39th Inf. Reg.  I do not know much of my Dad’s military history during that time, but I believe he took command of the regiment from William Rosson just prior to the regiment’s return to the states.  I know that Fort Carson, Colorado was the first place we lived when I came to the US.

After Colorado, George Mitchell graduated from the Army War College in 1958 and served on the Army staff under Rosson.  In 1962 he commanded the 3rd Bdg. of the 1st AD during the Cuban Crisis.  He later served in Viet Nam as an advisor to a Vietnamese division while Rosson was Gen. Westmorland’s COS.

Finally,  George died in 1982 and Gen. Rosson married Dad’s second wife in Roanoke, VA and was instrumental in seeing the completion of the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia.

General Rosson died in 2009 (I believe) and is buried in Arlington.

I have enjoyed the 39th webpage and hope to get some information about my Dad.  Many Thanks.
