Paddy's Gang - 1/39 Infantry

Welcome!

There are a couple of ways you can make yourself known here at the 1/39 Inf Web Beacon. The easiest way is to simply enter your details (including a long-term email address) in the comments section of a relevant post. That will allow search engines like Google to find you, and makes it possible for you to do searches of your own and find other vets in these pages. Or, if you'd like to send me some words, photos -- YES, PHOTOS, PLEASE -- and stories for a specific post of your own, then by all means contact me directly.

I do have to admit that I tend to work very, very slowly, and post very, very rarely now that this old technology has been overtaken by social media sites such as Facebook, Military.com etcetera.

Of course, I'll keep all of these posts on this site so long as Blogger.com remains in operation.

Naturally, I won't pass your details along to spammers or scammers. And I'm not selling anything, either.

Meanwhile, if you're still in touch with anyone from those days, I'd be grateful if you would forward them an email with a link to this website, and be sure to raise a glass in honor of the times we had while serving with Paddy's Gang all those many years ago.

AAAO!

p.s. if you were also with 4/12 Inf (M), be sure to visit that web beacon as well.

I served in bravo company 1st bn 39th infantry from sept 1977 to june 1980 and was in 2nd platoon then weapons platoon.
I only remember sfc mapp, sgt andrews, ssg attaway and capt bertoff and capt noe.
I aslo remember a couple of friends by nick name, little rock and red.
I am looking for anyone who rembers or served with me during that time.
Once i was drunk and the guys hung me out the window from the 3rd floor and it scared the hell out of me when I woke up and saw only the sky.
Another time we were doing lake crossing with our apc and when i drove ours into the water it started to sink cause the mechanic didnt put the belly plate back on after doing a pm on it in the field.
I also was involved with the retracing the units war route when I was there all the way to luxemburg with a few guys.
I have a hard time remembering names and dates but wish to make contact with anyone who may remember me.
my name is arthur j fryer, I left there as a sgt and was with bravo company the whole time.
My first platoon leader was sfc mapp and sqd leader was sgt andrews who I realy didnt get along with.
I remember ssg attaway who I last saw at ft mccllen alabama.
I attended the nco academy there and also remember lt williams our platoon leader and lt clements who was out of west point.
If any one remembers please email me at arthurfryer2beking@yahoo.com or contact me at 352-503-2569. I live now in lecanto fl.
I also remember when they gave us the flu shot in dec 1978 at hhq in the basement and I eneded up with the flu and the guys had to take me to the infirmary.
I hope I can make contact with anyone who remembers and maybe get some names they remember like hoyle who was a big guy with redish hair.

I was in Co C, 1st Bn, 39th Inf from June 1968 to December 1969. I started out 11B10, and ended up 71H20 (company clerk). My wife and I lived with a German couple in Baumholder. Our son was born in Neubrucke. I remember many of the people there, but as I get older I seem to be losing more and more names. Capt Roy Morrow, 1SG Ronald Holsopple, SFC Ramsey, SSG Barela, Sgt Conti, SP5 Thomas Waghorn, SP4 Robert Bessete, SP4 Paul Manning, SP4 Gallagher, SP4 Wilczewski, SGM Tracey, SP4 Oscar Miller and on and on. Hope everyone is doing well. The day I left Germany I was called to Battalion where LtCol Nix (yes, we called him Mox Nix) presented me with a certificate membership to Paddys Gang(but of course, my name was mispelled lol). I really enjoyed my time in Baumholder. It helped being married where I could live off post and have a car. SP5 Vaughn O'Laughlin delta47@charter.net

I served in the 1st of the 39th from Jan, 1966- November 1968. I initially was a Plt. leader in C Co. under CPT Nick Nahaus at Worms. In late 1966 when the Nam levies came down, I took over command of B Co as a 1st Lt. because we were so short on officers & E-5 to E7 NCO's. SSG Raymond Malpica was my 1st Sargent (Tops).I oversaw the relocation from Worms to Baumholder in mid 1967- what a shit hole compared to Worms! In late 1967 thru mid 1968 we had half our equipment in administrative storage because of low manning and were rated only 40% combat effective. At one point we were down to 5 NCO's & one other 2nd Lt. Umberger and myself in the entire company. Those were some tough times as we had to fill several positions simultaneously. Early 1968 saw troops & staffing arriving in greater numbers. Lt Dick Durhan was C Co CO, Lt George Burson was A Co CO & CPT Chuck Lowe was HHC CO. LTC John Barrett was Bn. CO. I'd love to hear from any of you guys that served during these times- Bill Corray E-mail -lcorray@charter.net. Ph.618-407-3418

I arrived in C Co in Baumholder in June of 1968. We had a new Company Commander named Roy C Morrow. Since I had college and could type, I was made the new Company Clerk. When I got there, Co C was just beginning to get replacements. In fact, the Battalion got 40 some men, all artillery trained. The Battalion Sgt Major Tracy and First Sgt Holsopple, along with Spec5 Waghorn from Battalion, were instrumental in my learning the job, as well as making the job fulfilling, and, dare I say, fun. Those were good times. The Battalion had just returned from Luxembourg not long before I got there. I was married so lived in a German home, had a beat up VW,and had a son born there. I can relate to the shortage of Officers, as at one time we had the CO and a 2nd lt, who of course was made XO as well. He got his own jeep, and that pleased him to no end lol. The "old hands" all talked about Worms, but I never got to experience anything other than the Rock. The very first day I was in Baumholder I walked downtown, and saw a high school classmate of mine walking up the sidewalk toward me. I left Baumholder in December of 1969, and have always meant to go back, but haven't.
