Idar Oberstein 1979
Also from Chuck Braziel, these two snaps were taken ten clicks down the road from where we were posted with the 1st Battalion, 39th Infantry:
Thank you, Chuck.
Readers may remember the US Army post just west of these photos, up in the suburb of Algenrodt. Strassburg Kaserne was occupied until August 2008 (I understand it was closed out by the 1st Battalion, 94th Field Artillery).
AAAO!

Both shots are from Idar-Oberstein which was one of our favorite and closest towns to visit. We would walk/hitchhike, split a taxi or take the bus over. Generally a decent location to drink beer and meet girls. Had a couple of good discos (remember this was the end of the 70's...), restaurants and near the base of the church in the mountain, a good Gausthaus with liter beers.
Seem to recall Idar-Oberstein being referred to as the gem capitol of Germany, and the story of two princes. One was pushed and killed from the top of the mountain, and the other brother built a church in the mountain as an attempt to appease God. Also had a very good schwimmbad.
Shots of the church and castle.
Thanks again,
Chuck
