Two Guys from E Co 1/39 Inf, 1986 . . .
. . . were SP/4 Bobo and SP/4 Lespinasse, both fellows with French names.
Bobo came from a small town in Texas. I say "small town", but it was probably bigger than Baumholder FRG, with its population of 5000 Rheinlanders plus a half a dozen cows still living in a small hof down the east end of the Hauptstrasse. Anyway, Bobo was an 11 Hotel like most of the rest of the guys in E Co 1/39 Inf. If memory serves, he meant to go back home and study criminal justice when he got out of the Army. A quiet, serious guy. Married I believe.
I never got Reggie Lespinasse's whole story, but I think his family had come from the Caribbean, maybe Haiti, maybe the Virgin Islands. Still had a faint accent, and word was that he spoke good French. He'd been around a fair bit and was always a big hit with the ladies, especially out in the clubs on the economy away from town. Last time I talked to him there was some question of him marrying a European girl. Was she German or French? Whichever it was, I don't think she was from the immediate area. Perhaps one of the bigger towns over in the Saarland. Anyway, one fine rare sunny day we were cleaning out the tracks in the new washrack, the one closer to Lager Aulenbach that had the POL separation system, and you could see that Reggie was thinking real hard. Turned out to be about this lady of his, a big decision for anybody. Sorry to say that I never learned how it all ended up; I moved on down to A Co 1/39 Inf not long afterward.
But someone out there knows. . . .

UPDATE: I just wanted to bump this one in hope of improving search results for Darryl Bobo, Reginald Lespinasse, and Donald Peters, good old 11H hands from Baumholder days.

Les was from Haiti and Daryl was from West Alabama... I still think about those two myself from time to time but Bobo was a little ole pvt 1 when I was in Echo...

Bobo was a character! He was my M901 driver for a while. I remember you almost NEVER saw him without a "Mountain Dew" That was his Must have Poggie bait. He suffered a real bad electrocution, but I don't remember how it happened. Bobo was one of those guys that attracted bad juju, you know what I mean? It seemed he was always getting banged up some how. His wife was one of the best people I ever met. She worked in the chow hall for a while, but quit because the GIs were always hitting on her, and it stressed there marriage badly.
Matt Dennis -- now there's a familiar name from the old days! I think our time there in Echo Co overlapped by about six months.
I missed this comment when you first sent it. If you're still reading, please click through the link on the blog post and send me an email. (Unfortunately, I can't reply directly to comments).

Aha -- another Echo Co vet posting in the comments! If Bo was your driver, I'm thinking you were one of the squad leaders, but I can't guess which one. You'd have served with me, SFC Brom, SSG Tompkins, SGT Farrell, CPL Kohli . . . how about using the link in the blog post to send me an email?
AAAO!
Blast it, I just realized the original post about Bo and Les doesn't have an email link. Here's one that does:

Frank,
How about dropping me a line through one of the email links on the Web Beacon? Will see if I've got contact details for any of the guys you worked with up at Battalion.
My databased went south on my a while back, but I can put some of the stuff together from emails and old posts.

Same for you -- please send an email, and I'll try to link you up with a couple guys from Echo Co.

Hi, David
Thanks for dropping by. This site's been pretty quiet while I've been working on another side project, but I try to keep an eye on new comments.
Donald Peters! There's a name I've been trying to remember for a long time. Unless I've got it wrong, he was a SP/4 in '86 when I got there and lived off post. Pretty sure he got an M-60 tangled in a turret one time. I remember some other stories, too. . . .
Am trying to remember Louis Rise. He wasn't the tall guy from KC, was he?
How about you -- third platoon as well? I must have known you but am having a hard time putting a face to the name.
OK, drop me a line though the link at the home page if you like. Would be cool to compare notes, see who you've stayed in touch with.
Cheers
Matt
